I start out by basting my background to a piece of muslin. The wool and cotton  has been felted and pressed. This extra layer will add stability when it is hung. I'm thinking of making 9-12 different blocks to form a quilt. So I definitely do not want it to sag.

I like to baste my wool motifs in place, once I decide where they go. Sometimes I will take photos to help make these decisions. After basting, I whip stitch the initial parts in place. I use one strand of floss or thread in a matching color. These stitches are small; barely visible. I don't pull too tightly when sewing so there's no puckering.
